BYOD4L is back in January 2018!

‘Bring Your Own Device for Learning’ course (or for short BYOD4L) is back for 2018

Running from the 15-19 January 2018

BYOD4L is a bite-size facilitated open course offered over 5 days for educators and students  in HE but also anybody else who would like to learn with us as to how we can utilise our digital media and devices for professional, lifelong and lifewide learning.

Leading the weeks activities once again will be Sheila MacNeill (Glasgow Caledonian University),  Alex Spiers (University of Liverpool) Neil Withnell (University of Salford)

For the sixth outing of the open online course we are doing something a little different. Don’t worry, we will still be using the 5Cs framework developed by the course creators Nerantzi and Beckingham but we’ve extended it a little  bit.  This year we will double the topics – yes that’s right 10 for the price of 5!! They are the following:

  • Connecting and Confidence
  • Communicating and (Digital) Capabilities
  • Curation and Copyright
  • Collaborating and Community
  • Creating and Celebrating

As ever we’ll being using an inquiry-based approach that enable participants to learn  with others and/or on their own within a supportive community, so come on in and join the conversations.

We invite you to join the conversations in one or all of the above topics and work towards an open badge or two 😉 There will be seven open badges available in total. One for each topic, one for the community and a course badge if you successfully complete the whole course. All work submitted will be peer reviewed and can be used as evidence of CPD.

The course site is available at Feel free to follow @BYOD4L on Twitter to keep up-to-date with all course announcements. The course hashtag is #BYOD4L.

Each evening there will be a tweetchat between 8-9pm GMT. There is an opportunity to both listen in and contribute to a discussion on Twitter via the hashtag #BYOD4Lchat.

In the previous five iterations of the course this has been a vibrant learning space where participants share ideas and learn together.

A special combined #BYOD4L tweetchat will take place on the 17th of January, 8-9pm with #LTHEchat at 8pm UK time.

BYOD4L is openly licensed and has been developed by colleagues at Manchester Metropolitan University and Sheffield Hallam University.

This is the 6th time BYOD4L has been  offered since January 2014. After developing a model through which engagement can be scaled-up or down through informal cross-institutional collaboration, we are experimenting with another idea that would potentially enable other individuals and groups to host and organise BYOD4L in the future re-using the existing digital BYOD4L spaces and resources at any moment in time this would be useful for them and their institutions. If you are interested to find out more regarding this, please let us know and we can discuss.

Please extend this invitation to others who might be interested in joining us. Thank you very much.

We look forward to seeing you on the 15th if not before 😉

Neil Withnell, University of Salford @neilwithnell, Alex Spiers, University of Liverpool  @alexgspiers, Sheila MacNeill, Glasgow Caledonian University @sheilmcn

If you are participating remember to collect and display your BYOD4L community badge 😉
