#BYOD4L 2015 in review, thank you all

Hello dear BYOD4L friends,

The WordPress.com stats helpers prepared a 2015 annual report for us.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 8,500 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Click here to see the complete report.

We thank you all for being with us three times now since January 2014.

The 4th iteration of BYOD4L is in preparation and we will be together again in January 2016. If you would like to join us, all you need to do is join the BYOD4L community at https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/115166756393440336480 and follow us on Twitter at @byod4l

We wish you all a happy and creative New Year!

Call for January 2016 #BYOD4L #BYOD4Lchat Leads

Hello dear friends,

Many of you have asked if #BYOD4L will be offered again. Well, the answer is yes. BYOD4L will be back and we hope that you will be able to join us in January 2016, 11th – 15th for a week of professional development around how we can use our smart devices for learning and teaching. Thank you for all your support since January 2014 and for all of you who have been with us since then. This next iteration will be No 4 and it is very exciting for us as we are taking a new direction that will hopefully create a sustainable model to offer BYOD4L and similar courses all year round.

So what will be different?

1.Organisers wanted: We are looking for up to two organisers for January 2015 who are experienced open practitioners and would like to lead BYOD4L in January mentored by Chrissi and Sue. If you are interested, please get in touch with Chrissi or Sue by the 17th of December the latest. See also January 2016 team page for more information regarding this exciting opportunity.

2.Support system: We will be reaching out to you for help and seek community moderators who would like to join the organising team. If you would like to be one of them, please register your interest in the BYOD4L community. If you are interested, what this would mean is that you participate in discussions in the community throughout the week, without overpowering conversations (using questioning techniques really helps!) and helping when and where needed if there are learners who experience difficulties.

3. Tweetchats, every day 8pm UK time: Yes, they will be back, but the main feature will be Question Showers. What this means is that the questions will be generated by the community and each day will be linked to the daily theme, one of the 5Cs. It will be mad but also very useful as this will give us the opportunity to problem solve collaboratively. On Wednesday we will be joining with the #LTHEchat so this will be a bit different and a great opportunity to join up the two communities.

3. New stories: We are looking for new mini stories linked to the 5Cs (connecting, communicating, curating, collaborating and creating). If you would like to contribute yours as a short film, please share the link to your clips so that we can consider this before going live in January. It would be wonderful to use some of your stories. For example take a look at the connecting student and staff scenarios.

During the week, there will be loads of opportunities to engage asynchronously and synchronously. What hasn’t changed is our inquiry-based approach which will help you contextualise the themes we will be exploring together and consider changes to our practices.

We wish you a lovely festive break and a healthy, happy and creative New Year.

See you in the New Year 😉

#BYOD4L will be back in January 2016!

Dear friends,

Since the last iteration in January 2015, we have been contacted by many asking if #BYOD4L will be back.

We are now in a position to say “yes”. The 4th iteration of BYOD4L will be offered in January, 11th to 15th, 2016.

We plan to make some changes to the course based on our evaluation from the last three iterations and invite you to get in touch with us if you have any suggestions too.

We are looking for institutions and partners who would like to offer #BYOD4L as a professional and personal development opportunity for their staff who teach or support learning but also students and therefore join the organising team and co-facilitate #BYOD4L in January 2016. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to discuss with us.

If you have participated in a past iteration of #BYOD4L and would like to support others this time around, please let us know also.

Thank you for embracing this open learnng and development opportunity and your interest and support. We really look forward to learning together in January 2016.

The BYOD4L journey continues…

Dear friends,

Thank you so much for joining us this week. It was so exciting to learn with and from you. We are truly  impressed with how you opened-up, engaged and shared practices but also played and experimented with new ideas in a variety of social media spaces but also in many physical locations!!! It was fascinating to experience together how a community emerged! It was also wonderful to see that colleagues and students who had joined us before, in Jan 14 or July 14, returned.

You can read the final storify of the CREATING tweetchat HERE. Thank you for joining in the madness today and embracing playful and creative learning with Whitney and Chrissi!

If you were capturing your learning in a portfolio, feel free to add the link to our padlet if you haven’t done this already. Please remember that you could claim one or more of the BYOD4L badges. All work is peer reviewed. Have a look on our #byod4l badges page and get in touch if you have any questions, ok?

The journey continues, where will it take us? image source: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7265/7715571798_8df1569bc3_z.jpg

We will hopefully be able to evaluate a number of aspects of this BYOD4L iteration and refine our approach for next time. We don’t know yet when the next iteration might be… perhaps in July! We will be looking again at identifying institutional participation, so if you are interested, let us know.

If you participated during the week, visibly or invisibly in BYOD4L, please consider completing our short final survey > This will help us a lot to evaluate this initiative and make hopefully improvements to any future iteration. Let us also know if you would also be available to participate in a focus group via Google hangout. Our ethical commitment is stated on the site. See https://byod4learning.wordpress.com/about/ethics/

A massive thank you to all our collaborators and participants. None of this would have been possible without you. We hope this journey has been of value for you and triggered new ideas, thinking and is leading to actions too. Just thinking about things is not enough! It is the doing that can make a real difference!

All resources and community spaces will remain open and available to all so feel free to continue explorating. Thanks again for joining us on this journey.

Enjoy the rest of the academic year and stay in touch, ok?

Where is it going to happen?

On Twitter. Search for the hashtag #BYOD4Lchat and follow @BYOD4L.

We really look forward to this superchat and an exciting week ahead with loads of opportunities to uncover, discover and recover but also explore, experiment and play with pedagogical ideas but most importantly connect and learn with others in a really diverse and distributed community about how we can use the devices we carry around with us for learning and teaching in higher education!

#BYOD4L a new journey begins @melsiguk

new horizons image source cc Chrissi Nerantzi http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7139/7715570192_019a068fb2_z.jpg

Dear friends,

The facilitated part of BYOD4L has now come to an end. Please remember learning doesn’t stop here!

Taking forward BYOD4L

It was lovely to share this journey with you all during this week. We have loads to celebrate and reflect on. We have been truly impressed with how you have engaged and learned with and from each other. Please don’t see this as the end of it all. We just started getting to know each other and we would love to stay in touch and explore further opportunities for collaboration and development The site itself and all collaborative spaces will remain open. Feel free to use these in any way you find useful and appropriate. The only tiny little thing we ask, is to respect the creative commons licencing agreement, which is displayed on the site. Perhaps you could use a local version of BYOD4L and let students lead? Perhaps you could use BYOD4L with your own students? Would it be useful to include in an institutional Academic Development offer? As we all have said many times this week, learning happens everywhere. Please see the BYOD4L site as part of the package or the box. For us BYOD4L has been a magical open box. Without its people, the box, might be open but there won’t be any magic. See how you can bring people together around BYOD4L so that the box becomes magical again. There are further ideas about how you could adapt BYOD4L but we are sure you will have your own ideas also. It would be fantastic to find out how you will continue using BYOD4L.

BYOD4L Open Badges

During the week, we have seen many of you capturing your learning in portfolios and we are looking forward to receive some of your work to be peer reviewed for a badge or two. Think about it. Anybody is welcome to use BYOD4L and claim badges (thank you David Hopkings for making this possible!!!) even if you didn’t participate in the facilitated iteration. You might have been studying on your own or as part of another facilitated group. This should not stop you from claiming a MELSIG BYOD4L badge if you have completed the work. For more information regarding badges and how to claim, please have a look at our Badges pages.

MELSIG Book Project

As mentioned this week, MELSIG has put a call out for contributions to our new book project. Would you consider submitting a case study, a thought piece or something else. Have a look at the MELSIG book project page for further information. Support is also available. All you need to do is reach out and let us know, ok?

Evaluation

The BYOD4L MELSIG team will start working on the evaluation of this experiment and start dissemination findings in a variety of ways. Please complete the final survey if that is ok with you as this will provide useful information about  your experience. Our main focus is on the richness and the quality of the experience. So if you are willing to be interviewed as well, that would be great. We have also been collecting quantitative data thanks to Colin Gray and his learning analytics expertise.

Thanks to our contributors

The BYOD4L facilitators have also been reflecting on their experience as facilitators and we plan to analyse to gain a deeper insight into the collective experience and find ways to enhance practice. We are also fortunate as all BYOD4L activities were peer observed so to speak, for the whole duration of the week. All activities were completely transparent and open (something that doesn’t happen in face-to-face settings!!!) and we will receive a peer review from our critical friend Lars Uhlin. We would also like to thank Ellie Livermore our artist for the BYOD4L design and for making this available under a creative commons licence, Dr Cristina Costa who reviewed BYOD4L before the start and Prof. Norman Jackson who showed interest in our experiment and gave us the opportunity to think about our conceptual framework.

Take care and keep in touch our lovely BYOD4L friends.

Chrissi, Sue, Kathrine, Alex, Panos, Neil, Andrew, David, Ola, Chris and Dee

#BYOD4L dates: 27-31 January 2014 – @melsiguk
